Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin
(The German Heart Institute Berlin),

in Cooperation with

The International Academy of Life Sciences

introduces a

Fellowship Program for Mechanical Circulatory Support and Heart Replacement

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin offers a Fellowship for Surgeons and Internists. Fellows will be introduced to our principles of treatment for end-stage-heart failure. They will take active part in the evaluation, operation and postoperative treatment of MCS patients.
The aim of the fellowship is to enable Graduates in Medicine to successfully evaluate, operate and treat patients with most advanced techniques.

Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin is unique regarding its experience in the use of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) and heart replacement, due to its program for the treatment of terminal heart failure. In our institute, more than 1600 heart transplantations have been performed and more than 2300 patients have been fitted with mechanical circulatory support devices or artificial hearts, not counting devices that are routinely used in cardiac surgery like intra-aortic balloon pumps or ECMO (http://www.dhzb.de/).

Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin and the International Academy of Life Sciences look forward to your application and will handle all bureaucratic matters, including visas and legal permits, for those accepted. The fellowship grant consists of € 2500 per month for a two-year period.

PROGRAM DESIGN:

The fellowship program is designed to provide superior patient management skills and lead to the development of subspecialist academicians.

During the program, fellows will participate in the preoperative evaluation, surgical procedures and postoperative management of all individual patient conditions. The staff surgeons' guidance will depend on the case in question and each fellow’s experience.

Routine participation in seminars and grand rounds pertaining to thoracic & vascular surgical problems will be expected. Outstanding visiting faculty will be available for further qualification.

RESEARCH PROJECTS:

DHZB encourages participation in research projects. These are clinical retrospective studies in transplantation medicine or molecular biological projects in stem cell research, also including research in microcirculation and pulmonary hypertension.

CORE FACULTY

The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery
The Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin was opened in 1986, at a time when the capacity for cardiovascular surgery in Germany was inadequate. Under the chairmanship of heart surgeon Professor Roland Hetzer the institution quickly achieved international importance as a center for the treatment of cardiac, thoracic and vascular diseases.

Prof. Dr. med. h.c. mult. Roland Hetzer

Director & Chairman
German Heart Institute Berlin
Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery

The Department of Congenital Heart Defects and Pediatric Cardiology
Founded in 1988, the Department of Congenital Heart Defects / Pediatric Cardiology treats patients of all ages with congenital heart problems. The department works in close collaboration with the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and the Department of Anesthesiology. Our patients come from all over Germany, as well as from abroad.

Prof. Dr. med. Felix Berger
Director
Department of Congenital Heart Defects & Pediatric Cardiology

The Department of Anesthesiology
No major surgical intervention is possible without anesthesia. This area of medical specialization is thus particularly closely connected to - in fact almost symbiotic with - surgery and the constantly broadening spectrum of modern operative procedures. Contemporary anesthesiology demands expertise in line with up-to-the-minute findings in the field.

Prof. Dr. med. Hermann Kuppe
Director
Department of Anesthesiology
